Bantamweight Oscar Mojica (12-5-1, 1 KO) from Dallas, Texas dropped Irish Paddy Barnes from Belfast, Northern Ireland in the second round with a wicked left hook to the body at Madison Square Garden to the shock of Barnes' Irish fans on St. Patrick's day.
Mojica who is a well known fighter that has put in his rounds of many fights here in Dallas, Texas, and fighting on the biggest stage of his boxing career, will be coming home with the biggest win of his career.
Having fought twice in 2018, Mojica starts off the new year with a great win at the Mecca of Boxing at Madison Square Garden as part of the undercard between Barnes countryman Michael Conlan (11-0, 6 KO's) against Ruben Hernandez (24-2-2, 10 KO's).
The luck of the Irish was not to be when Mojica quickly landed a brutal left hook to the nose of Barnes in the first minute of the round and broke it, causing his opponent to fight the entire round which was bleeding profusely.
The two-time Bronze medalist Barnes then almost was stopped in the second round when Mojica landed a vicious left hook to the body that dropped barnes to his knees wincing in pain. Barnes took the count and came right back swinging to the roar of the crowd and made it to the bell.
Throughout the fight, Barnes could not breath through his mouth, but he had a very good fourth round and a fairly good round in the fifth, despite Mojica's attempts to the body as requested by his corner before the bell sounded for the round.
Although Barnes fought a good fight, it was not enough to get the win. According to COMPUBOX, Mojica landed more power punches and was able to connect with several good uppercuts. But at the end it was the knockdown to the the body that sealed the split decision win.
